Located just 70 kilometers from Merida Yucatan, Izamal is a Magical Town that is also known as the city “Of the 3 cultures” due to the 3 historical periods lived there. Izamal is very famous for its yellow color on houses, restaurants, churches, schools and every wall you see. Izamal is all about yellow and that’s what makes it a unique town in the Yucatan Peninsula.

Besides its wonderful and colonial buildings, Izamal was an important Mayan religious center and today you can visit the archaeological sites of four great pyramids that dominate the center of town. What you are going to enjoy the most is getting lost in its cobbled streets with yellow and white facades.

The San Antonio de Padua Convent

The most iconic place in Izamal is definitely The San Antonio de Padua Convent, which is the main attraction in Izamal, its large size, and architecture astonishes everyone who visits it. It has the largest atrium in America. The San Antonio de Padua Convent was built between 1549 and 1561 dedicated to Zamná, a Mayan priest.

It was founded by the Franciscans and was built on the site of the highest pyramid in the entire town; this was called Pop Hol Chac. Its yellow color will captivate you on the outside and its beautiful architecture will make you want to return to this gorgeous place.

Kinich Kakmo Pyramid

Besides its wonderful architecture, Izamal possesses ancient pyramids to visit, among the most important you can find Kinich Kakmo, this pyramid is visible from a considerable distance in all directions, It has an elevation of 27 meters. It is located north of the main square of Izamal city. Kinich Kakmo means "Fire Macaw with Solar Face". It is one of the most outstanding and important vestiges of Izamal and of the Mayan civilization in the Yucatan Peninsula.

If you are visiting Chichen Itza you might want to discover this surprising town. It takes about an hour to get to Izamal from Chichen Itza, It will be a super road trip if you decide to do it.
