A new museum at Chichén Itzá, the ancient Mayan complex located in the north of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, will showcase some of the region’s latest archaeological discoveries, including some found during excavation work for the controversial Tren Maya (Maya Train) project.

The INAH also recently said it would open an area of Chichén Itzá, called Chichén Viejo, that was previously closed to tourists. Earlier this year, archaeologists discovered an ancient elite housing complex there.

Exciting tidings for history aficionados and globetrotters alike! The much-awaited unveiling of the Chichen Itza Museum is imminent, providing a distinctive opportunity for visitors to delve into the prolific cultural legacy of the time-honored Mayan civilization. As a UNESCO World Heritage site, the previous Chichen Itza museum showcased a plethora of relics such as intricate carvings, pottery, sculptures, and tools, offering a glimpse into the captivating world of the Mayans. This time, the NEW museum will particularly showcase artifacts discovered during the Tren Maya excavations.

Diego Prieto, the director of the INAH, divulged scant information about the museum's particulars, such as the identities of its overseers and its projected expenses. INAH had earlier mentioned that nearly MX265m ($14.4m) would be reserved for the Chichen Itza Museum's construction, along with a new visitor center and restoration of about 23 historical structures within the complex.

Carlos Esperón, the director of the Maya Museum in Cancún, located in the neighboring state of Quintana Roo, conveyed that the endeavor could span two years. Once the preliminary survey of the location is finished, the project would be executed at a leisurely pace due to the groundwork that needs to be laid.
